A WOMAN “smiled and waved” at CCTV cameras as she pretended to be a nurse to target vulnerable people in a supported living home.

Danielle Mills, of West Road, Westcliff, has admitted carrying out a burglary at a supported living facility in Shelly Square in Southend.

The 41-year-old posed as a nurse to enter flats within the facility before stealing multiple items including a laptop, a handbag and a wallet.

According to Essex Police Mills told residents inside the flats that she was a nurse to earn their trust, taking advantage of those in the home despite many of them being bed-bound or wheelchair-bound.

CCTV obtained by police as part of the investigation showed Mills smiling and waving at cameras as she entered the property.

Mills appeared at Southend Magistrates Court on Monday where she pleaded guilty to burglary and has been remanded in custody until she is sentenced.

Detective Constable Zak Steggles said “Mills targeted vulnerable people with many residents at this facility being bed bound or wheelchair bound.

“Whilst in the address, Mills smiled and waved at CCTV cameras within the property. When shown this footage during interview, Mills turned to face the wall and refused to watch it.

“Despite her lack of cooperation, officers were able secure a charge against her.

“Burglary is such a distressing crime and we are committed to hold those who offend accountable for their actions. In 2023, we facilitated more than 1000 arrests for burglary offences and this year, we have seen a significant reduction in offences for residential burglary.”

Mills carried out the burglary on April 9 and was arrested by police on Saturday.

She will appear at Basildon Crown Court on June 3 for sentencing.
