SOUTHEND Saxons are looking to make history at Warners Bridge on Saturday.

Southend host Royal Wootton Bassett in the semi-final of the Papa John's Community Cup.

And Saxons' director of rugby Josh Ward is determined to secure victory and the club's first ever 15-a-side match at Twickenham for the final.

"I understand the club played in a sevens tournament at Twickenham in the late 1980s but in terms of a 15-a-side competitive game it's not been done and it's something we intend to do the first time," said Ward.

"We're ready to throw absolutely everything at this as a group and we're expecting a big crowd."

Southend head into the game having already been crowned Regional Two Anglia champions.

But Ward remains hungry for more success as his side aim to make the season even more memorable.

"We're really looking forward to Saturday," said Ward.

"We set off at the start of the season wanting to be as competitive as possible and see where it took us.

"This season has been incredible in the sense that we've already got three trophies and now we can make history as a group and as a club.

"Both our teams have won the league and the Priors made it a double by winning the cup as well.

"The Saxons want to replicate that and the chance to get to Twickenham is huge."

Southend have not been beaten since the opening day of the season and have now recorded 23 victories in succession.

But Ward is expecting the toughest test of the campaign on Saturday against Royal Wootton Bassett who are also enjoying a season to remember.

"We've worked hard to do some research on them," said Ward.

"We've done as much as we can which is useful.

"Our players have had a long, hard season and we've had to manage the load over the past month. .

"We're leaving no stone unturned but the opposition have mirrored what we've done in terms of the league.

"They've won 21 of their 22 games and we know it will be the toughest battle of the season.

"There's no question about that and we know they're a good side "But at the same time we're fully aware we are too."

The match will be the final time Saxons take to the pitch at Warners Bridge this season.

And Ward wants the fans to play their part.

"We're calling on the city to come and get behind their rugby team and see where it takes us," said Ward.

"It's a really big day for the club and we'd love as many people there as possible."

Saturday's match kicks off at 3pm.
