A NEW gift shop has opened its doors on Southend Pier among a number of new additions and events in an effort to "enhance" the landmark.

Mayor of Southend, councillor Ron Woodley, cut the ribbon to mark the opening of the shop with a range of unique merchandise on offer from seal plushies - a nod to the pier's beloved visitors - to custom tea towels and fridge magnets.

These bespoke items are created by an in-house designer at the council to capture the essence of Southend Pier and its cultural heritage.

The gift shop aims to enhance the visitor experience and celebrate the unique charm of the world's longest pleasure pier, and is one of many new additions unveiled on the pier so far this year.

They come as part of Southend Council's ongoing efforts to provide "memorable and enriching experiences" for visitors, which has included the pier's bank holiday weekend extravaganza at the beginning of the month where hundreds enjoyed live music and cocktails while soaking up the sun.

Mr Woodley, who was elected as the city’s 103rd Mayor last week, said: “I am delighted that one of my first official mayoral duties is to officially open this fantastic gift shop on our wonderful pier.

“The shop will be a welcome addition to the visitor experience, and not only offers a unique selection of merchandise, but also supports the council’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the pier as a cherished local landmark.”
