A BIKER is fighting for his life after crashing on a busy Southend road.

The man, in his twenties, was airlifted to the Royal London Hospital yesterday after suffering multiple fractures to his arms and legs as well as head injuries.

He was travelling down Queensway, beneath the roundabout off Southchurch Road and Sutton Road, when he lost control of his green Kawasaki motorbike and hit the central reservation.

Firefighters worked to free the man from the central reservation where he had become trapped following the collision at 1pm. It took crews an hour to free the man, who lives in Southend, using two sets of cutting equipment.

Paramedics then carried the man to Warrior Square car park, via Chichester Road, where the air ambulance had landed. He was airlifted at 3pm.

Both lanes of the dual carriageway were closed and the bridge over Queensway was also taped off. No other vehicle is believed to have been involved.

A police spokesman said the man had suffered life-threatening injuries and urged witnesses to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 101 or via email at collisionappeal@essex.pnn.police.uk.
