Grand job as £4.5m Leigh hotel renovation is making progress
WORK to revamp and reopen the historic Grand Hotel is progressing quickly.
A large skip and hoarding have appeared outside the building in Leigh Broadway owned by nightclub boss and former Towie TV star Mick Norcross.
The 18-month, £4.5million renovation started last month after Mr Norcross, 51, took over the building in 2011 and put forward proposals for a boutique hotel.
Tantalising pictures showing original features being uncovered have been posted from the hotel’s official Twitter profile @GrandHotelLeigh – showing the listed building’s huge rooms and views from the top floors.
A tweet sent to its 4,000 followers said: “Good morning site hoarding continuing & internal soft strip 50% complete, #thegrandplan is taking shape.”
Other work includes restoration of the brick and stonework around the site, which dates back to the 1890s.
Engineers from BT have also visited the hotel to start installing communications.
Alongside the updates on the work, pictures from inside the building have also been tweeted to the world.
The latest posts include a view inside the room which will be used as a private dining area for customers.
A message tweeted with the picture read: “Natural light in the private dining room, this will be special!!!”
Another image showed previously boarded up doors in the breakfast room reopened.
The brief glimpses inside have proven popular with residents of Leigh, with some commenting on the view of the work from the street.
Donna Bailey-Pillow wrote: “We go past every day and see the progress in just a few weeks.
I cannot wait until it’s open – good luck.”
Plans for the redevelopment will see the Grand become a boutique hotel with 20 bedrooms, a piano lounge, bar, restaurant, tea rooms and a luxury spa.
The design will match the building’s original Victorian era features.
The hotel is due to open in the summer of 2015.
