The two biggest storms to hit Essex in years swept through the county last night, with spectacular results.

Essex Fire Service has confirmed that they were not called out to any lightning related incidents overnight.

Experts from Essex Weather Centre have confirmed the storm was a 'Super Cell', most likely seen in the US, and the biggest and most spectacular storm to hit Essex in years.

Tom Defty, from the centre, said: “We won’t be seeing a storm like that for another five or ten years.”

Our readers were on hand to capture some impressive images...

If your idea of a fantastic image to print and frame is 460x300 pixels then I think you need to see an optician.

The images themselves are fine, my point to Mr "Right" was that the resolution is nowhere near high enough to make a decent print.

I suppose the world would be too boring if we all said "Well done, those who sent in these pictures, really shows just how angry electrical storms can be!"
If any of you people were real amateur photographers, that is the sort of supportive comment you should be making! If, on the other hand, you are professional, then you should know better, unless you are frightened someone might put you out of work!

Anyway, thanks Echo, for publishing these action shots, and thanks to all those that contributed. You've captured the essence of that storm here!

I honestly don't get what all the fuss is about, yes the pictures look good, but over the last couple of days all I've seen over facebook is pictures or videos of the lightning.
Anyone would think we had never seen it before, or experienced a storm with the way everyone seems to be reacting over it all.

Hi all, thanks to everyone for the nice comments - it really was one hell of a light show - and we don't really get that many decent electrical storms in this part of the country - usually when we do we are in the heart of it so getting outside and taking photos isn't really practical as water on the lens isn't a great idea. I've always wanted to capture lightning in camera but never really had the chance and I was rather happy with my results, hence the reason I felt like sharing them with a wider audience.
Regarding my background, I actually was a professional photographer who in recent years has turned amateur :)

Admittedly trying to print off the small version would not render a decent print - however if anyone wanted a larger version they can print off and enjoy then let me know and I would be happy to send you a higher resolution version that would be ideal for printing.. Contact me via my website (my username with .co.uk at the end)

have a great weekend!!

I've never experience storms like those we've had in the last few days. I'm in awe of the power of the weather and avidly enjoy every picture and video displayed.

Five or ten years?? We only had to wait 24 hours Mr Tom Defty and I am pretty sure this one was a Super Duper Cell.
