Councillor Stephen Cole has joined the Conservative Party
A CANVEY Island Independent Party councillor has joined the Conservative party in a shock defection.
Stephen Cole, councillor for Winter Gardens, said the independent party’s recent alliance with Ukip was one of the reason’s he chose to leave.
The move comes days after the Canvey East by-election last week when independent candidate Colin Letchford was voted in.
Castle Point Council is no longer run by a minority Conservative administration. With 21 members the group will be able to carry their policies even if the 14 Canvey Independent members join forces with the five Ukip members and independent councillor.
