A DEFENCE lawyer in the James Bulger murder trial has won undisclosed

damages following a libel action against a newspaper. Mr David Turner

QC, who defended 11-year-old killer Robert Thompson at Preston Crown

Court last November, accepted an out-of-court settlement from Mirror

Group Newspapers Ltd and People columnist Carol Sarler. An agreed

apology was read at Liverpool High Court relating to an article by Ms

Sarler in the People on November 28, making critical comments about Mr

Turner's representation of Thompson who, along with Jon Venables, also

11, was convicted of abducting and murdering two-year-old James and

ordered to be detained at Her Majesty's pleasure.
