GENEROUS youngsters and their parents staged their own mini Race for Life with a colourful fun run to raise cash for Cancer Research UK.

Montgomerie Primary School, in Thundersley, organised the event in the summer sunshine because cancer has touched the lives of so many people, including pupils and teachers.

Anthony Cosans, headteacher, said he was proud of his school for raising the cash for Cancer Research UK.

He said: “We have never done this sort of thing before, but decided to hold our own Race for Life after staff and pupils said they had somebody they know who has been affected by the disease.

“It is something that is very close to the school’s heart and it was an emotional but nice day.

“We had 190 children take part in the event, the children ran in their classes. Parents joined in too, running and walking with their children.

“We created a circuit and those who wanted to run were on the outside of the circuit and those pupils who wished to walk were on the inside of the circuit.”

Mr Cosans added the children received sponsorship and the donations will be collected in the coming weeks. He is expecting to collect a significant amount for the cancer charity.

He added: “It went so well we are considering holding another event next year.”
