A RUGBY player on Canvey has had an unusual makeover in a bid to raise money for charity.

Iranian-born Ali Zarei, 39, of OrmsbyRoad, shaved half his beard and head at Canvey Rugby Club, on Saturday, to fundraise for Little Havens Hospice.

Ali, who came to England 15 years ago, says his father’s fight with cancer inspired him.

His father, Noralla, died from a brain tumour eight years ago.

Mr Zarei said: “My father was in Iran battling the tumour, and it was such a difficult time for my family.

“In the time since he died, I began thinking how difficult it must be for children battling such a terrible illness. So I decided I should do something to raise money and awareness.”

Initially intending to shave half his beard, friends said they would only donate if he included his head.

Ali, who has played rugby on Canvey for eight years, says the club has been very supportive.

He said: “They helped me a lot, and that is why the cut took place at the club.

“I raised about £300 on that night alone, and all the members were very generous.”

“The total so far is £700 and I am hoping people can either donate to my fundraising page, or even do something similar themselves, as its for such a great cause.”
