REGGAE night Know Your Roots is dedicating an event as a tribute to Khabi Abrey, a pregnant woman who tragically died a fire in an apartment block in Westcliff this month.

The 30 year old, died in hospital on Monday May 9 following the fire at an apartment block in Balmoral Road on Saturday May 7.

Her unborn baby died of cardiac arrest due to the inhalation.

Chay Godfree, who runs the Know Your Roots events as part of the One Love Foundation group, said: "We are running this session as a tribute dance for my good friend and humble Roots daughter Khabi Abrey who recently passed.

"Khabi was a beautiful soul, with the most loving and caring way about her. She always came to Know Your Roots, and supported our other events same way.

"She was a righteous, true person who wanted good in the world. She was a good friend and I personally will miss her presence at the dances, and her wise words as a friend.

"We have decided to donate all the proceeds from this event to her husband Judah, so he can put it towards flying her family from Africa to send off their daughter.

"Anyone would want for that and I feel that is a right we all should have. It is so sad."

Know Your Roots - which raises money for various causes - usually asks for a £5 donation, but Chay said, "just this once we are requesting £10 if people can afford it."

The night takes place on June 3, at the Borough Hotel, on Southend seafront's Marine Parade, from 8pm until 3am.

The night will include the Jah Youth Sound system and Family, with the Foundation Defender and the Youthman International Sound.

There will also be stalls, crafts, arts and vegan food by Jerk Kitchen.
