Quartet’s own history lesson

FOUR south-east Essex golfers have played their part in achieving history.

Rochford’s Jay Beisser, Ross Dee (Orsett), Matthew Southgate (Thorpe Hall) and Three Rivers’ James Webber were in the Essex team that won the English County Championship at Chipping Sodbury.

With both having beaten Cumbria and Staffordshire, Essex met Witlshire on the final day with the title at stake. Essex had never previously won this crown, but they triumphed 5-4 with West Essex’s Ross Spurgeon collecting the vital point.

Southgate’s 5 and 4 success early on in the Witshire match played a big part in the victory and the Thorpe Hall club champion has earned a call-up to the England squad. Crondon Park, Billericay, owner Jason Fox donated trophies for plate competitions for the Thornton Cup and Leslie F Wood Trophy - and offered his course for the finals to be played. In the Thornton, Canons Brook beat Warley Park and Upminster took the Leslie Wood over Channels.

Ballards Gore hosted the County Mullis Trophy and victory went to John and Nicholas Bantick from Bentley.

Bryan Bone and Rob Burry (Garon Park) were third.

How disappointing that the report on the Essex county golf win had such a small mention, the event has been running for 75 years and Essex has never won it before. Its a great achievement and deserved more than just a few lines.
