Burnham sports miss out again

BURNHAM Sports suffered heartache on the final day of the season for the second successive year when losing to Chignal at Millfields.

Sports went into the game knowing that they needed to match, or better, the points haul of Rayleigh to be guaranteed promotion to the T Rippon Mid-Essex League premier division.

But Jamie Hamilton’s men crashed to 75 all out, chasing 183 to win, against a Chignal side who finished the campaign as champions.

Rayleigh, meanwhile, were beating Bentley to grab the second promotion place.

“It was really disappointing to again be so close and yet so far but hopefully 2011 will be third time lucky for us,” Hamilton said.

“Our batting has let us down on occasions this year and that’s what happened again on Saturday.

“But, in truth, we did well to get into the promotion hunt because we were third bottom a couple of months ago after not doing ourselves justice in the first half of the season.

“Our seven successive wins going into the Chignal game shows what we are capable of and that’s what we’ve got to take forward to next year.”
