Rare book sheds light on our history
A RARE copy of a book printed in 1720 is among a donation of books and slides given to a historical archive.
Rayleigh Through the Looking Glass is run by Mike Davies, who gives talks about the history of the town using his extensive collection of 2,000 slides of old photographs.
Mr Davies, of Dene Gardens, Rayleigh, said he was delighted to have two new collections, including some of the slides used by early presenters of slide shows about Rayleigh and its history.
Walter Voss used to give talks and his collection has been passed on through various hands, including Brian Byford, to Mr Davies.
An extensive book collection previously owned by Rayleigh businessman Reginald Hodson has also been given to Mr Davies by Geoff Sandford.
But the highlight is the book by the Rector of Holy Trinity Church, Arthur Ashby Sykes, printed in 1720.
Mr Davies added: "These are wonderful additions to our already substantial collection of memorabilia relating to Rayleigh."
