Updated: Home Secretary praises Vange police operation
HOME Secretary Jacqui Smith has called for a pioneering police operation that started in Basildon to be rolled out across the country.
Mrs Smith said police everywhere should adopt tactics of hounding hoodies and relentlessly filming them to cut crime.
Residents have said that life on the troubled 3/4 estate in Vange has improved dramatically following the Big Brother-style Operation Leopard in January.
Ms Smith praised the operation as she spoke at a Home Office conference, Antisocial behaviour: We're not Having it, at Westminster.
She said: "Operation Leopard is exactly the sort of intensive policing that can bring persistent offenders to their senses - involving daily police visits to their homes, repeated warnings for the troublemakers and relentless filming of them and their associates throughout the day and night.
"It creates an environment where those responsible for antisocial behaviour have no room for manoeuvre and nowhere to hide, where the tables are turned on offenders so those who harass our communities are themselves harried and harassed."
Officers have been out filming youngsters four times in areas in Basildon, Laindon and Canvey. They recently received funding to carry out 13 more operations in Basildon.

I hope that Inspector Burgess' and Sgt Brooks' scheme is taken seriously and rolled out for other forces (or is that services?)
A piece of common sense policing if ever there was, it gives the public a bit of confidence in their police.

You know Steve, you,re right. As a law abbiding, hard working resident of Vange 3/4 (yes, there are many of us)I welcomed this crackdown on the mindless few who ruin life for the rest of us.However, now the heat is off they have gone back to causing misery and mayhem to the rest of us.I realise that this kind of pressure cannot go on for ever but I wish these pests could be dealt with long term.

Short term gain Policing WILL not work long term.
'IN YOUR FACE POLICING' needs Officers committed to a beat long term making themselves familiar with the criminals annoying them and nicking them, and when the Police Officer is doing a good job DO NOT PROMOTE or MOVE them it must be LONG TERM!!

When the operation was on it was ok but once it was over everything went back to how it was to the point that the police were being laughed at,its a gimmick,no longevity, now with all the low income homes being built it can only get worse if the police commitment remains the same,i do not hold any hope

the vange area has got better since there are things put in place for the youths to attend too like the youth club on a thurs also there a dance lessons 13 to 19 and a 18/25 drop in , there has been a reduce in crime levels and people need to remember that children are our future and they need direction in life and support to help them understand

I could not agree more with the statement. Unfortunately, the responsibility for this should be with the parents and needs to be instilled from the cradle. Letting them run riot until their teens and then giving them youth clubs and dancing lessons is not the answer.
