Beaten...for telling yobs to stop abuse
Darren Sepple
Darren Sepple

A MAN has spoken of his agonising recovery after thugs left him with a shattered pelvis and snapped hamstring.

Darren Sepple, 41, spoke as ringleader James Ryan was jailed for 18 months yesterday at Basildon Crown Court.

Window-cleaner Mr Sepple was battered after he asked the thugs to stop abusing waitresses at Chilli's restaurant, on Basildon's Festival Leisure Park.

He said: "It is 18 months since the attack and I am still not right. My pelvis was fractured in two places and my hamstring was also snapped. I have been unable to return to my job. It's hard not being able to do the things I used to do. I can't run or cycle any more, but at least I am on the mend."

Mr Sepple, who underwent a bone graft operation for his fractures, said he felt closure now Ryan, 46, had been brought to justice.

Witnesses to the attack, in 2006, said Ryan rained blows on Mr Sepple and continued to attack him as he lay unconscious on the ground.

Jailing Ryan, Judge Rupert Overbury told him: "You know your behaviour was totally disgraceful and seems to be born out of your bullying character."

Ryan, of Redditch Road, Alvechurch, Birmingham, has a string of convictions for violent offences.

Charges against another man, Patrick O'Connor, 24, of Fairbourne Avenue, Birmingham, were dropped, due to insufficient evidence.

Is that all ?
18 months ?

What kind of a deterrent is that ?

Ryan and O'Connor? Hmmm...

Bas Vegas is definitely a bit of a violent hotspot at the moment.

Asbo said "Is that all? 18 months? What kind of deterrent is that?
Well I would say no deterrent at all. These sorts of people should be sent away for at least 5 years.
The thug should be given a sentence that will make him think again about doing this sort of thing. Then again the management of Chilli's should have thrown him out for abusing their staff.

What only 18 months this guy has got to live with his injuries for the rest of his life. I hope they're not released early.

To g, na (whoever you are). First off, I doubt you can even get a job let alone one as a judge as you clearly cannot string legible sentences together. Secondly as you apparently can read, read the report again. It says the yobs came from BIRMINGHAM not Essex, so don't go blaming this on Essex people and lastly if you hate Essex so much what are doing bothering to read an Essex news website for ?

it has nothing to do withit being essex it can happen anywhere

In Bournemouth a few months ago 2 young men were murdered in thge same road on the same day

one of the poor lads was only about 19 ...we live in a harsh society so to beat it we must give harsher punishments ...in singapore therre is hardly any crime....why beacause the punishment is so severe only a few dare break the rules.

Best wishes to the poor bloke who got beaten

So if this elitist left wing government is so soft on crime, then how come the prison population is at a record high?

Perhaps you would be happy for a prison tax to build more prisons? No, I didn't think so.

I have asked you this on a number of occasions and you still don't have an answer.

You may also want to consider the fact that Judges set the prison term, the Department of Justice just issues guidelines, but judges get to set the sentence.

As you and I weren't in court, perhaps there was more to this case than is reported in the story above?

As for "Your time is coming" talk, well that it may be, but from the tone of your posts, your time has gone!

again, none of you seem to understand that there are sentencing guidelines for crimes.

Your knee-jerk Daily Hate Mail reactions are typical of a society fed and governed by trash media. What would you like us to do? Lock up every petty criminal for the rest of their lives? Guidelines are there for a reason.

This is an Assault/ABH maybe GBH at a push. You can't imprison somebody for 15 years for assault.

Maybe Echo 'readers' should push for Rebekka Wade to become PM as you sheep follow everything the manipulative psycho publishes anyway.

I think the real lesson here is not to get involved. It's hard enough to avoid trouble without bringing it on like this. Call the police and let them deal with it.

Change the record, Grillo.

I think a prison tax would be great.

Is copying and pasting an arrestable offence?

actually u bunch of c***s he was a hard working geezer with a family who had little involvement in the attack, so how's that for f*****g justice.

You make no sense.

Grillo has a fair point, you don't.
