Mods get ready for northern soul dancefloor stomp

SOULFUL sounds from the Sixties will be in the air at Capones nightclub tomorrow.

The South Essex Soul Club is hosting the northern soul and Motown night at the venue in Benfleet Road, Hadleigh.

Mods from all over the country make regular pilgrimages to the popular night, which only takes place about four times a year at Capones.

The musical style, which emerged during the mod scene in northern clubs in Stoke, Wigan and Blackpool, includes obscure artists as well as music from the likes of the Four Tops, Brenda Holloway and Martha Reeves.

“It’s a real niche night,” says Rupert Duke, owner of Capones.

“The DJs play all the old 7in vinyl, and actually stop playing in between songs.

“There are lots of people in Fred Perry shirts and parker jackets, and they even put talcum powder on the dance floor to slide around.

“It makes for a really fun night.”

DJs John Stubbs, Paul McKay, Jon Downs and Dave Smith will be playing the cult tunes, from 8pm to 2am.

Tickets cost £5 on the door. For more information visit www.southessexsoulclub.moonfruit.com
