Screaming for metal exposure

THEY’VE a penchant for post-hardcore progression and an ear for experimental soundscaping.

The songs of Southend metal band Between the Screams are penetrating an increasing number of places, from Radio 1’s Rock Show to Total Rock Radio.

Last month, the band pushed their music to another audience when Our Last Days on Earth, the title track from the group’s debut album, was included on the cover CD of Metal Hammer magazine.

“We were placed alongside bands like Five Finger Death Punch, Killswitch Engage and others way, way above our level,” says guitarist Dan Waterhouse.

“I guess it was an honour to be thought of in the same way as those bands.

“The magazine is the UK’s biggest selling metal and rock magazine, so any exposure we get in there is good for us.

“We hope it will open us up to a wider audience that may not usually listen to progressive and ambient metal, as its such a niche genre.”

It’s not just the airwaves where the five-piece can be sampled, as they’re also being featured on rock channel Scuzz TV.

The video to Our Last Days on Earth, which was filmed in Rayleigh by director Jon Stone, last August, can be requested on the digital channel.

“Getting the video added to the Scuzz playlist was a big thing for us,” adds Dan.

On March 5 the boys – singer Adam Ralph, Chris Froment on electronics, bassist Terry Blake, drummer Chris Horton and Dan – are taking their tunes to Chinnerys, in Southend, for a headline show.

They’ll be playing material from the album, which was released in October, and a few new songs too.

“In two years time we want to be doing what we are now, but on a grander scale,” says Dan.

“Bigger, better and to more people is always the dream.”

Our Last Days on Earth is out now on Basick Records, and available on iTunes and in HMV.
