I have been on Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) for just over a year. I am feeling a little better and would like to try and gradually return to work. I have been told that I can work for a few hours and keep my ESA. However a friend has told me that because my ESA is based on my National Insurance contributions (because I worked for years), I will lose most of what I earn in reduced housing benefit and council tax benefit. With the extra cost of getting to work I am worried I could end up worse off working and would I really have been better off if I hadn’t paid contributions?

I’m currently searching online for a property to rent. Some people I’ve contacted have asked me to ‘prove’ I have the funds by doing a money transfer before they’ll even show me the property. Is this legitimate?

Some years ago I bought my council flat under the right to buy scheme. I’ve now been told that I will have to pay over £50,000 towards major renovation works. I was given no warning of this when I bought the place and I simply don’t have the money – what can I do?

I am a couple of years off retirement age. I know I won’t now get my state pension at 60 but I’m unclear about exactly when I’ll qualify and whether I’ll be entitled to a full pension when I stop work. Can you help?
