BEACHES, a long history and beautiful views over the estuary, Canvey Island is a unique gem in Essex’s crown.

The island lies off the south coast of Essex and is completely below sea level and is as well known for its community spirit as it is for flooding.

Steeped in history, people first lived on the island in the Iron Age nearly 2,000 years ago and in the early 17th century the Dutch arrived. Two tiny Dutch cottages now stand preserved in Canvey Village.

Today residents regularly stroll along the sea wall at Concord Beach. A colourful mural depicting the island’s history lines the beach as children paddle in the shallows. The island’s maritime heritage is reflected in the selection of restaurants and pubs with The Lobster Smack and The Labworth being popular haunts.

The Lobster Smack, alongside the grade two listed wooden coastguard cottage, is mentioned in Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations.
