A PROFESSIONAL boxer and his sparring partner are opening a gym at Southend Central Station to promote fitness, martial arts and boxing.

The Locker Room will open at 6am every day to enable commuters to exercise before getting on the train to work.

It will also have a juice bar and coffee kiosk.

The gym has weight machines and a full-size boxing ring and punch bag room. It is set to open in the next two weeks.

One of the co-owners is James Chisholm, a professional boxer who represented Ireland at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, and has a record of 12 unbeaten professional fights.

Following an injury, Mr Chisholm has turned his attention to getting young people interested in the sport. He said: “There’s a saying that ‘kids in sport stay out of court’ and I believe strongly in that theory.”

His business partner, Trevor Woodward, is a martial arts expert.

He said: “We’re fulfilling a lifelong ambition to start our own health club.”

The club is hosting an open weekend on October 11 and 12.

There are lots of gyms operating in Southend, however the amount of fat people wandering the high street seems to have increased. Not sure having a gym at a train station is any incentive to get fit. Half the lardo's get off the train and saunter to the nearest takeaway. Can't see a gym at Southend Central making it.
