2,000 give up smoking with trust's help
A CAMPAIGN to persuade smokers to give up has been hailed a huge success - with more than 2,000 south Essex people quitting in the past 12 months.
South East Essex Primary Care Trust figures show 2,114 smokers have quit for a month or longer with the help of health services.
This means the trust has done 2 per cent better than Government targets, and 1 per cent better than it did than the previous year.
Health bosses have welcomed the news, but say the ban on smoking in public has not persuaded as many people to give up as they
had hoped.
Jenny Wheeler, NHS stop smoking manager for south east Essex, said: "We did expect a significant increase following the change in the law last July.
"In fact, there was only a slight increase, so we ran high-profile campaigns at the end of the year to publicise the support available for people planning a New Year resolution to stop smoking."
l For help giving up, call the South Essex Stop Smoking Service on 01268 464511, or text QUIT to 64446.

I just wanted to say "Well Done!" to everyone who has given up smoking. I don't smoke but I do understand (from friends and family) that it can be extremely hard to give up. Hooray for them all! :D
