Here comes 2008!

DECEMBER is traditionally the time to eat, drink and be merry but now the month is coming to a close, it's time to get ready for New Year's Eve - the biggest party of the year.

There's no better way to celebrate the end of the festive season than with a night on the tiles and whatever your musical preference may be, you'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to venues in South Essex.

Clubs will be pulling out all the stops this Monday to make sure the New Year starts with a bang but the biggest problem you're likely to face is deciding where to see in 2008.

Southend's nightspots will be positively jumping with everything from rock to reggae so here's our pick of the best places to celebrate the start of the New Year.

The Royal Hotel, in the High Street, will be hosting a night of house, techno and electro with the likes of DJ Norman H. But the evening - called Audio Chic vs. The Experimental Circle Club - will also be giving clubbers the chance to relax with a chillout lounge and retro cinema.

Up at Storm, in Elmer Approach, partygoers will be donning their gladrags for a Kinky Malinki night with a twist. Not only will DJ Gordon Edge be spinning some of the hottest house tunes around but the New Year's Eve party has a Moulin Rouge theme so dressing up is a must.

Talk and Bar Bluu will be putting on one of Southend's biggest party nights and the dual venue, in Lucy Road, plans to play some of the greatest club classics until the wee small hours.

The same goes for Mayhem, in Warrior Square, where clubbers will be getting down to music from its usual Saturday night party, Absolute, and next door, another big bash will be taking place at Varsity.

Over the road, at Dick de Vigne's, there'll be plenty of New Year fun and frolics and Bakers Bar, in Alexandra Street, will be hosting a Heaven and Hell themed party. This particular night, playing RnB and hip-hop, is for diehard clubbers only as the party won't stop until 9am!

Rockers will be able to test their endurance at Bar Lambs in Westcliff too, where The Xmas Factor will see several live bands take to the stage. And if you can last the distance, you'll be rewarded with a free breakfast at 6am.

Alternatively, get funky at Saks, in Clifftown Road, where the very best in soul and disco will be played and over in Rayleigh, the Pink Toothbrush will be putting on its biggest indie bash of the year, based on the Saturday night music policy.

Clubbers at Capones, in Benfleet, will be partying to the very best in funky house and garage and over in Basildon, crowds flocking to the Festival Leisure Park will be all set for a great night.

End of year parties are being held in Jumpin Jaks, Lava & Ignite and in the two main clubs, special guests The Ratpack will make sure the evening goes with a swing.

Just remember to drink responsibly!
