SOUTHEND clubbers can chill out with a relaxing seaside view at Ocean Beats on Sundays.
DJ Jonny Kango is conjuring up a mix of ambient, funk, Latin, jazz and deep house tunes at the Ocean Beach restaurant, in Eastern Esplanade. Best of all, this therapeutic music session is completely free of charge.
Jonny says: “In the mid-Nineties I used to be one of the main residents at a chill-out night held at the end of Southend Pier, playing down tempo and chill-out tunes.
“It was called Sundays at the Pier and ran for several years. It was a totally unique event, but sadly it came to an end and there hasn’t been anything similar in Southend since.
“When Ocean Beach opened, I thought it was an ideal place to do something similar because of its location right on the beach.
“The whole concept is based on the Cafe Mambo and Cafe Del Mar-type nights in Ibiza, where you expect to hear ambient chilled out classics, right through to deep house.
“This music is programmed to complement the setting and is the perfect way to wind down on a Sunday evening from a hectic weekend clubbing.”
Ocean Beats starts at 5pm in the afternoon, to cash in on the best of the weather until the sun sets, with the action set to move outside on to the restaurant’s decking once the weather warms up.
“We will also be making regular mix CDs to give away on the evenings,” adds Jonny.
“We’ve already compiled Volume One. Just come up to the DJ stand and we’ll give you a complimentary copy.”
Ocean Beats runs every Sunday until 11pm, extended to 1am on bank holidays and special event nights.
