Southend Airshow 2008
Airshow facts

THE 2008 Maxims Casino Southend Airshow is one of the largest free airshows in Europe.
Staged by Southend Council it takes place over the Spring Bank Holiday - Sunday May 25 and Bank Holiday Monday May 26.
Southend Council says the two-day event attracts approximately three-quarters of a million visitors to Southend, generates more than £10 million into the local economy every year and sustains 60 jobs in Southend.
Since the show began it has attracted more than 10 million visitors to Southend.
Recently the council undertook a cost benefit analysis and commissioned an economic impact study from the East of England Tourist Board to evaluate the costs and benefits of hosting such a large event.
The findings concluded that the event raises the profile of Southend, helping to change negative perceptions of the town and showcasing the many attractions it has to offer.
This in turn creates repeat visitors, who return to Southend to enjoy more of the town's many attractions.
Corporate co-operation is pinpointed as a key strength of the survey, with local companies working together to make the most of the promotional opportunities.
Tourist businesses are well supported - bed spaces are filled, and attractions such as the Pier receive a boost in visitor numbers. Local charities take advantage of the crowds to raise money.
Strong professional bonds between the emergency services and the military are forged, and recruitment stands present career opportunities to the public. Many of the stalls have an educational element.
The council says the 2008 Maxims Casino Southend Airshow promotes social inclusion - there is no admission fee, allowing low-income families to enjoy the event without financial pressures.

Word on the street is:
The Red Arrows will be based at the airport for the weekend of the airshow, prior to flying off for their US tour.

Word on the street is:
It will be just as rubbish as last year with only half of the show flying and NOT at the times advertised as last year.
I say ditch the air show it causes no end of problems for residents, Southend is a no go area for the whole weekend.

You choose to live at a seaside resort and then moan when people come to the seaside. Take some advice: Go away!

I think the weather may have played some small part in last year's problems ?

There you go already the air show is a pain in the neck and causing traffic congestion. It is only the Wednesday before the event and the seafront is being messed up with many delays being caused while set up begins. Goodness knows it will only get worse. Aaaggghh!!!
As I have said on countless occasions and to put a lie to many contributor’s comments this does not just affect us for two days – it is a whole week and enough is enough.
Please, please, please no more air shows.

I am not miserable and I am certainly not a git.
I make many contributions to the Echo web site and in general most people agree with me on most issues, however, the air show seems to put many contributors on the defensive, as if this is such a marvellous occasion. It is not, it never has been and it never will be. It is dangerous; it causes disruption and is just basically a paradise for those that wish to sell rubbish to those gullible enough to buy it.

Well David
You must be quite a regular at something that you disagree with, knowing exactly what goes on down on the front - are you really that short sighted that you cant see what a boom that this weekend is for the people that cant afford to take the children to places that they have to pay for. Not everyone is as miserable as you about seeing people enjoying themselves or they would not put it on every year - thanks Maxims for sponsoring this fantastic weekend every year.

I love how David always describes the airshow as 'dangerous'.
More injuries are probably prevented by closing off the seafront to traffic durign the airshow period than would have happened normally! How is it dangerous and where is the past evidence?

It's seems you are correct. I know this is usually what happens, but airport sources said they were due to stay at Southend, but this is no longer the case, why I don't know ?
One of the reasons they don't use the airport is because the runway isn't wide enough for them to do a formation take off. How true this is I don't know.
I thing they have only ever used the airport on one occasion, and that was about 35yrs ago.

Are you insinuating that it's likely a plane will crash into the onlooking crowds?
If so then we must get rid of Adventure Island too as it's also clearly a hazard to all!
Face it, we will benefit economically from the event. What's wrong with putting up with extra congestion and litter for a a short period if the outcome will be beneficial to Southend?
It's a big and popluar event which is why your opinion is ever so unpopular.

There is a rumor going round that the Red arrows are to land at Southend Airport. [bold]This is untrue.[/bold]
The Red Arrows will in fact be operating from Manston airfield for the duration of the Southend Airshow, rather than Southend or RAF Scampton.
I can confirm this after talking to the public relations manager for the Red Arrows.
Sorry for the disappoinment.

Tom,
You are in my opinion a t-w-a-t.
Youre next to the airport! I once lived at Eastwoodberry cottages, the one with the red light on at the end of the runway, you could lay in the bath and look up the runway.
Airports and planes suck my grannys knee shooters!

I have just been told that the will be no Harrier, No Jag & No Tornado.
Yes, Red Arrows and the The Typhoon and the arrows are flying why do we have to put up really lame "Utterly Butterly" displays.
what we want is BIG JETS!!! Loads of noise that could make you poo your pants at the slightest rumble of afterburn.
I am proud to say that I have lived in Southend all my life and Airshow weekend is the worst weekend to go anywhere and do anything. But it's just for one weekend.
Much better than the good old days when you get together with four of your mates hire a skip and enter the raft race.
ah well soon be over, I looking forwards to the mayhem and getting knocked over with double prams. who knows i may even indulge in buying double glazing at one of the stalls.
LOL!
