As young people struggle to find a job, Ashley Pritchard and Francis Brady thought they had come to a dead end.

But spending six weeks learning about different jobs, thanks to youth charity UKSA, means they are seeing the jobs market with fresh eyes.

The pair spend time at the Brightlingsea Pioneer Sailing Trust, learning carpentry skills and working in a team.

Ashley, 21, of Colchester, says the experience has left him more positive about finding work.

He explains: “I had completed a Level 2 National Diploma in IT but I was struggling to find work in that area. I didn’t want to be out of work. When I registered with the Jobcentre the adviser recommended me for this programme.

“Since I joined I have learned carpentry skills at the boatyard in Brightlingsea, along with engine maintenance, and got my power boat level 2 license on the Isle of Wight. It’s opened my eyes to the opportunities out there. I would never have looked at these other industries before and I am not sure I want to continue in IT.”

The UKSA, which runs the Change Direction programme on the south coast of England, ran its first programme in Colchester over the last few weeks.

It is aimed at transforming the lives of unemployed youngsters, aged 19 to 24, through a six-week development programme.

It hopes to remove barriers to employment and prepare youngsters for the workplace through maritime and watersports activities, creates a positive work ethic, establishes daily routine and builds self-belief.

It has been funded by Job Centre Plus, on Colchester High Street, and the UKSA, which is based in Cowes on the Isle of Wight, hopes to run more in the area.

Francis Brady, 20, also of Colchester, was on a living at home course at Colchester Institute, learning about life skills, when he gave it up to find a job.

“I had only done one paid job before, so I needed more experience. This programme has developed my communication skills and my confidence, and shown me there are different jobs out there I can do. I have realised there are so many jobs and I know now I want to do something outdoors.”

One person on the programme has been offered a job with Better Healthcare in Colchester.
