A PUB set in the heart of Canewdon village looked like an ideal place for a Sunday roast.
I’d often driven past the Anchor and thought it looked homely and inviting from the outside.
Inside, we found it looked like a traditional pub decked out with wooden furniture and we settled down to a cosy table by the fireplace.
I thought it was a nice touch that the pub was filled with witches – dolls decked out in capes and hats – in a nod to Canewdon’s heritage as a centre for witchcraft.
The bar was quite raucous and, although we were unperterbed by the loud swearing, I’m not sure it would be the best place to take my mum for a Sunday afternoon.
The pub usually offers a two for £10 deal, which includes old favourites like steak pie, lasagne, and scampi and chips.
But as it was a Sunday, the only option was roast beef or roast gammon and we were happy to plump for one of each. The meat arrived in large portions and was quite tender. But the roast potatoes had been deep-fat fried and were rather tasteless.
The new potatoes, carrots and cabbage were a little bland and lacked seasoning.
We then waited for a good 15 minutes for our plates to be cleared, which we couldn’t understand, as by then the only other table in the restaurant had left and there were only a few people at the bar.
The waitress was polite, but admitted she had forgotten we were there.
We had planned to have dessert, but after we were left waiting for a further 15 minutes we decided not to bother.
We left quite disappointed as we had found the Anchor less inviting than it had appeared from the outside.
What we ate Roast beef £8.95 Roast gammon £8.95 Both meals served with roast potatoes, carrots and cabbage Our verdict Out of Five Atmosphere 2 Food 2 Decor 3 Value 2 Service 1
