£40 for 3-course meal for 2 is a real winner

THE Ivory Rooms in Billericay is somewhere I had been to many times for a drink, but never for a meal.

The restaurant, between Monday and Thursday, has a 4-3-2-1 offer, which seemed like the perfect excuse to go and taste the food.

The deal is on four days, for three courses, for two people at one price, £40, which includes a bottle of wine.

There is also a two-course option for £14.95.

The choice of food is surprisingly varied. I began with a duck leg, with chopped cucumber, spring onions and teriyaki sauce. There were four pancakes for me to stuff with the filling. The flavours were superb.

My girlfriend had a red onion tart with a walnut salad, which she polished off in a flash.

For the main event, I had a fillet of sea bass in a light tempura, on a bed of pak choi and noodles with a sweet chilli dressing. The batter was extremely light, but gave a nice crunch which complemented the saucy noodles and veg well.

My girlfriend opted for roasted salmon fillet with new potatoes, with a butter capers, lemon and parsley sauce. The salmon was nice and chunky and the sauce was a delight. As we pondered over our dessert choices, a pianist began to play which added to the atmosphere.

I settled on a sticky toffee pudding with toffee sauce and clotted cream, while my girlfriend went for a lime and ginger creme brulee.

Both deserts were heavenly, just the right portions and not too heavy.

The meal was a triumph. The Ivory Rooms is so much more than just a place for drinking.
