Final Fantasy then – it’s certainly not a game that lives up to its name, but it is brilliant. This is now, can you believe it, XIII. Not only that, but the second half.

Fans of these complex Japanese mystical battlers can’t get enough them, but the real joy is that they were clever enough not to make it really matter if you have skipped the first dozen outings.

Many characters. Many mysteries to sort of solve. Lives to keep track of, skills to learn, nuances so numerous it will make your head spin, and that’s just the way we like it.

Lots moaned about the last one being too linear, so now you get multiple paths. Happy now people? Just to make it all even more involved.

Time, space, gods, they are all there to be manipulated but never quite mastered. Lightning, Sarah, and stats, lots and lots of stats.

This is no Call of Duty – you need to remember so much, so the age rating is not really because little ones won’t like the battles – it’s because they won’t keep up.

Monsters help, and you get to upgrade them, and the battle sequences are fast and once more complex as you’d expect so there is little time to worry about the 30 or so hours it will take to complete. But that’s the fun, right?
