Wendi Peters has told how she got stuck in between sheep on her new show, Flockstars.

The former Coronation Street star, best known for playing Cilla Battersby on the ITV soap, is amongst the eight celebrities taking part in ITV’s new competition alongside Tony Blackburn, Strictly Come Dancing’s Brendan Cole, Birds Of A Feather actress Leslie Joseph and N-Dubz’s Fazer aka Richard Rawson.

“I was supposed to be herding a group of sheep over a little bridge but they were the stupidest of stupid sheep and they just wouldn’t budge,” she recalled.

“So I ended up stuck on the bridge, hemmed in by sheep who wouldn’t get out of my way. It was a farce. It will be hilarious TV.”

She added: “I thought, ‘If I’m going to fail, I may as well fail in style’. I’m quite a competitive person and it was just so out of control. It was brilliant and I had no choice but to laugh.”

Flockstars, hosted by Gabby Logan, sees the celebrities learning to train their sheepdogs to round up sheep. One contestant will be eliminated each week, and the last one standing will be named Flockstars Champion.

“I was interested to learn a new skill, and this seemed like a particular challenge,” Wendi explained.

“I did MasterChef and I like cooking so that was something I was used to. The same with the Sewing Bee, I did a bit of sewing at school. But I don’t often go into my garden rounding up sheep!”

The 47-year-old actress added: “And what bliss to spend six weeks in the fresh air on a farm, with animals, with a great bunch of people.”

But she admitted the show has had its challenges.

“I really didn’t know what to expect,” she said. “I remember as a child watching One Man And His Dog, and it’s a real skill.

“Once I’d mastered the basic signals, in a big field, it was easy to do the big wide turns. But once we moved to the indoor arena and had obstacles thrown in there, it became trickier and I’ve found it quite frustrating at times.”

Radio presenter Tony joked he’s been trying to whisper sweet nothings into the sheep’ ears to get them on his side.

“I’m a vegetarian. I’m the only person here who doesn’t want to eat the cast. And I did think being vegetarian, the sheep would be nice to me,” he said.

“I did whisper to one of them, ‘Guys, for God’s sake, I’m on your side’. But it made no difference.”

Flockstars begins on ITV on July 31.
