Leighton Meester has admitted she still finds herself having childish arguments with her family whenever she goes home.

The Gossip Girl actress is among the all-star cast of The Judge, a film about a big shot lawyer, played by Robert Downey Jr, who returns home to his small town to help his estranged father, the town judge, played by Robert Duvall, in his time of need.

Attending the premiere of the film in Los Angeles, many of the cast agreed that family relationships can be tricky.

Leighton revealed: "I think you can be rude and mean to them and you know that they still love you deep down.

"I'm from a little town in Florida and you get back home and you're like mad at your parents, and you're like 'I'm an adult, I live a normal life. Come on!'."

Robert Duvall agreed: "I don't know any family that doesn't have its individual complications."

And Billy Bob Thornton mused: "They say sometimes you hurt the ones you love. Maybe it's easier. Maybe a lot of the stuff that you really want to say to other people, it ends up coming out more venomous with the people who are close to you."

The Judge opens in UK cinemas on October 17, 2014.
