Danny Dyer didn’t fancy his chances in the celebrity version of The Great British Bake Off – because he was worried he had offended Mary Berry by licking her ear during a drunken acceptance speech at an awards ceremony.

The EastEnders, who admitted he could not remember much of the night at the TV Choice Awards, told Jonathan Ross: “They’ve asked me to do it but I don’t know how Mary is with me because I cuddled her at the awards.”

Danny, who plays Queen Vic landlord Mick Carter, was joined on Wossy’s ITV chat show by Bake Off hosts Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins, Dame Diana Rigg and Johnny Vegas.

The star, who grew up in Canning Town, east London, told Jonathan he changes his scripts to bring in more cockney rhyming slang.

He said: “I made the job hard for myself really because I thought when I come in it, I want to bring back a bit of the East End. They’re good writers there but they’re quite middle class people so I’m constantly changing the dialogue and I’m freaking their nut out and they have meetings over the word ‘boat race’.”
