21 Jump Street is getting a female-friendly makeover.

Following in the footsteps of an all-female Ghostbusters, comes a female-led spin-off of the action comedies, starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill.

Lucia Aniello and Paul Downs, co-producers and co-writers on Comedy Central sitcom Broad City, will pen the screenplay for Sony, based on the tone of the rebooted films, reported The Tracking Board.

The big-screen remakes – 21 Jump Street and sequel 22 Jump Street – were based on the Fox TV show, created by Patrick Hasburgh and Stephen J Cannell, which aired between 1987 and 1991.

Johnny Depp and Peter DeLuise originally starred as undercover cops, who posed as high school students to bust a drugs ring, in the series.

Bridesmaids actresses Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig are to star alongside Saturday Night Live’s Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon in the Ghostbusters spin-off by Bridesmaids director Paul Feig.

Writing duo Lucia and Paul have written and directed the comedic short films Emmy Training Day, which starred Melissa McCarthy and Joel McHale, and Life After Emmy, which featured Kristin Chenoweth and Jeremy Piven.
