Bookies have suspended bets on who will sing the next James Bond theme tune after one punter tried to put £15,000 on Radiohead.

With names from Ellie Goulding to Sam Smith mentioned in the running, bookies said the last 24 hours have seen a huge shake up in the betting for who will be unveiled as singer of the song for new film Spectre.

All betting on the song has been suspended at William Hill after a Middlesex-based punter attempted to place a £15,000 online wager on Radiohead getting the nod.

William Hill spokesman Rupert Adams said: “The first gamble of the day was Ellie Goulding and punters were backing her as if she already had the gig but just as we were thinking of pulling the plug we had a load of bets for Radiohead including one customer who asked to place a £15,000 bet on the band.

“There seem to be all kinds of rumours and the plot has had more twists and turns than a classic Bond tale.”

He said they “expect an announcement any day now”.

The latest odds on who the Spectre theme tune singer will be are as follows: 6/4 Radiohead, 2/1 Sam Smith, 4/1 Ellie Goulding, 5/1 Adele, 14/1 Lana del Rey, 14/1 Lorde, 33/1 Coldplay.

Bookmaker Coral has also suspended betting on who will sing the theme song.

But before the firm pulled the plug on betting last night, they still had Ellie as their 1/2 favourite.

They said she was subject to a surge of bets all in the space of a couple of hours late yesterday evening.

Coral is odds-on at 10-11 that Spectre is the highest grossing UK film ever, while they have also opening up betting on who will be the next James Bond, in which Damian Lewis is the favourite at 1-2.

Yesterday it was thought that Ellie may have posted the closest hint yet that she will be performing on the Bond soundtrack.

The 28-year-old posted a snap of herself leaving London’s famous Abbey Road Studios, and captioned the photo: “That’s a wrap.”

Earlier in July, she posted a cryptic tweet saying, “Live And Let Die”, which many took as a reference to the Bond movie of the same name.

Director Sam Mendes hinted recently that the Spectre theme song had been done, but gave away no further details.

He told the BBC: “I can say that the song’s been recorded and it’s fantastic and I’m very excited about it. You won’t have to wait long.”

Skyfall’s theme song was sung by Adele, and took the Oscar for Best Original Song.

Asked whether Radiohead were indeed singing the Bond theme tune, a spokesman for the band told the Press Association: “We’ve got no comment on it.”
