Martin Lewis has revealed he gets “embarrassed” whenever he gets recognised on the streets.

The Money Saving Expert, who is Britain’s ‘most googled man’, admitted he doesn’t know how to respond to the more emotional exchanges.

“I never know what to say and I always get a bit embarrassed!” he said.

“Sometimes they tell me I’ve changed their life, and it’s a lot easier to answer a question than it is to have someone tell you how wonderful you are… But I’m very, very fortunate.”

The 43-year-old consumer champion continued: “It’s a bit like being the only doctor in the country. I would say 45% of people want to ask me a question, 45% of people want to say thank you, and 10% just want an autograph and selfie.”

Martin added: “I’m not made for TV, but the public know that when they ask me a question on the street, I’ll know the answer.”

The financial journalist, who fronts ITV’s The Martin Lewis Money Show with Saira Khan, joked how he has come to terms with his unique skills.

“Some people were born to read music and play the piano; sadly, my gift was that I can look at credit card terms and conditions and see how companies are trying to screw us over,” he admitted.

“It’s not as glamorous but it’s practical, and the fact that I have a big gob and happen to be a reasonable communicator means it works!”

The father-of-one – who is married to former Channel 5 presenter, Lara Lewington – received an OBE in 2014 for services to consumer rights and to charitable services.

He plans to offer more financially-savvy advice in the future, saying: “My career so far has been about helping people to help themselves.

“I now want to move into helping those people who are temporarily incapable of helping themselves, and need protecting. That’s my plan for the next year; it’s a big passion for me.”

The new series of The Martin Lewis Money Show continues on Mondays at 8pm on ITV.
