AN artist who is fast becoming a bit of a star in the arts world is going to be opening the Shorelines Festival in Leigh on Friday.

Caroline Bergvall’s performance is entitled DRIFT – a “journey through time where languages mix and electronic text, voice and live percussion conjure up the ancient to cohabit with the present”.

Caroline, an internationally renowned writer and performer, and Norwegian percussionist Ingar Zach will be performing the piece, inspired by an anonymous 10th Century Anglo- Saxon poem called Seafarer.

DRIFT was initially commissioned as a live performance by Gru/ Transtheatre (Geneva, 2012) and will be published as a book by Nightboat Books in 2014.

Caroline has recently exhibited and had performances at the South Bank Centre and Tate Modern, London and the Powerplant Gallery, Toronto.

Rachel Lichtenstein, artist, writer and organiser of Shorelines, said: “One of the most compelling performers and brilliantly inventive poets of our time, Caroline Bergvall is completely in control of her stage craft and a master of multiple languages – ancient and modern.

“This is a truly international show, taking the audience beyond borders of language and time. This is the premiere of DRIFT in the UK – make sure you can say you were there!”
