A UNIQUE show combing storytelling, theatre and circus is coming to the New Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich.

Rime is being produced by Square Peg, one of the leading companies in the UK which combines theatre with traditional circus skills, such as acrobatics, juggling and high-wire acts.

Formed in 2009 through a residency at London’s Roundhouse, the company’s latest show is a retelling of Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s epic poem, the Rime of the Ancient Mariner.

Appearing in the production is actor Tomos James, whom regulars of the Colchester’s Mercury Theatre may recognise from his performances in productions of David Copperfield, Dancing at Lughnasa and A View From the Bridge.

Tomos is one of the founding members of Square Peg and came up with the idea of Rime.

He explains: “It was an idea I had for a while, but because it’s got quite a complex narrative and is essentially a series of fantastic images, it’s a hard story to tell, although circus lends itself very well to it.”

With acrobatics, song and story, as well as Chinese poles, silks, flips and tricks, Square Peg has created a visual treat which cleverly conveys the haunting tale of the sailor who shot an albatross.

Tomas adds: “We’ve done it both outdoors and indoors and it works equally well in both. I must admit it’s a big hit at festivals, especially as people can see the rig and the sails from quite a long way away.”
