BANDS gave colourful performances to ensure the Purple Festival was as spectacular as ever.

More than 20 bands performed live at the annual festival, which was organised by Southend Business Improvement District on the Southend seafront.

The festival marks the fifth year Southend has been awarded the Purple Flag, a prestigious national award which recognises a lively, fun and safe town centre, and a well-managed night time economy.

Southend was the first seaside resort in the country to receive the award which was given by the Association of Town Centre Management in 2012.

Spectators enjoyed a diverse line-up of artists performing at the Pier Hill and City Beach stages.

Bands and artists included Rollin Machine, Queensburys, Waterfalls, Killatrix, Bloom, Maxibrites, Southchurch and The Scarletts.

Fireworks were also on display to celebrate Southend’s successful night-time economy and life.

Visitors enjoyed the dazzling display of fireworks which appropriately painted the sky purple as well an array of other bright colours.

Although the weather was not perfect for the fireworks, visitors still enjoyed the spectacle and came prepared with umbrellas and warm clothing. The drizzling rain did not deter visitors from soaking in the lively atmosphere and taking part in the celebrations.
