Duun-dun, dun-dun, duun-duun, ...you know the rest.

But did you know that when composer John Williams first played his ominous two-note “shark theme” score for Steven Spielberg on a piano, the director thought it was a joke?

Later Spielberg clearly changed his tune and would say, “The score was clearly responsible for half of the success of that movie.”

Now more than 40 years on since it burst onto the big screen, Jaws and its terrifying score still brings a chill down the spine.

This Easter brings the chance for fans of the 1975 blockbuster film to enjoy a unique experience at the Cliffs Pavilion in Southend.

‘Jaws in Concert’ on Tuesday April 10, will give audiences the chance to watch the iconic film in full accompanied by the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Ben Palmer. Spielberg’s original summer movie blockbuster Jaws won a multitude of awards, as did John Williams’ Academy Award-winning score.

Based on the best-selling novel by Peter Benchley, this masterpiece of suspense tells the tale of a small New England seaside community terrorised by a predatory great white shark.

Now audiences will have the chance to experience the power of a live symphony orchestra performing the entire score in sync with one of the greatest motion pictures of all time.

Although you may have seen the film plenty of times, the story of Jaws and its transition from page to film is a fascinating one.

None of the three main actors -- Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss -- was the producers’ first choice for the parts? Robert Duvall and Charlton Heston were among those considered for Chief Brody, while Lee Marvin and Sterling Hayden were initially sought for Captain Quint, and Jeff Bridges was discussed for Matt Hooper, the marine biologist.

What’s more Brody’s famous line upon encountering Jaws for the first time: “We’re gonna need a bigger boat,” was ad-libbed by Scheider.

At test screenings, the audience’s screams drowned out the line, so Spielberg re-edited the scene to make it more audible. The famous movie quote has gone down in history as one of the most memorable ever.

In addition the American Film Institute has ranked Jaws’s score as among the top 10 in movie history.

Tickets for the Cliffs event range from £31.50- £59. For tickets and more details visit southendtheatres.org.uk.
