I KNOW this might sound a little weird but for the last few weeks the DJs have had Ellie Goulding on our minds.

For all those not in the know, and I very much include myself in that group of people, Miss Goulding is one of the country’s most famous songstresses.

I am aware of some of her hit records, such as her rather lovely cover of the Elton John classic, Your Song, and an earlier work I believe called Starry Eyed but other than that I’m ashamed to say she’s kind of passed me by.

Until last week that is when my daughter and I got chatting about her latest song, On My Mind.

It’s quite a catchy little thing, especially when Miss Goulding sings the almost staccato refrain ‘I Got You on My Mind’ which lends the song its title.

But what is perhaps more fascinating is the story behind the song.

As a journalist I’m obviously a bit partial to a good story, and let’s face it we kind of all like it when there’s a bit of salacious gossip to it.

According to my knowledgeable daughter ‘On My Mind’ has quite a back history to it, all starting with another British singer/songwriter, Ed Sheeran.

I am reliably informed, although I probably should point out this is all internet tittle tattle and has never actually been confirmed by the artists themselves, that Mr Sheeran used to have a bit of a soft spot for Miss Goulding.

Looking at her picture, I can see why.

Now whether they were ‘dating’ or they weren’t, it appears Miss Goulding then had a liason with a member of One Direction, the Irish one with the blonde hair who has a similar name to mine, again I’m told.

Mr Sheeran was a little unhappy about this and so wrote the song Don’t which, if you know the lyrics, is quite an angry little number although doesn’t actually say who the girl was who ‘broke’ his heart.

Cue the internet going into speculative overdrive.

And so now we have Miss Goulding’s alleged reply to that song, which of course she denies is a reply to that song, and the internet’s gone mad again.

It’s clear from these lyrics that if we’re to believe Miss Goulding, Mr Sheeran has, at best, got the wrong end of the stick when it comes to who was in love with who, and at worst, has been stretching the truth a little bit.

What a scamp, possibly.

Last week it was literally all we talked about over our spaghetti bolognese, which I did find slightly depressing because to be honest I don’t really care whether either of them have been wronged/had their hearts broken.

Sure, I loved all the gossipy mystery behind it, and I suspect many other people did too. May be that’s why the songs did so well!

But feel sorry for the pair? Erm, no!

Both Ed and Ellie, which actually when you put together does make for quite a cute couple name, are essentially music multi-million pound cash machines, who, I should think, are living every young musician’s dream.

Well done to them for their catchy little numbers and one day I do hope they find the true loves, although if they want my advice, I’d avoid a fellow musician.

That said, I will be picking the subjects for spaghetti bolognese night from now on.
