Traveller funeral clogs up A127
A BUSY dual carriageway was virtually brought to a halt as hundreds of mourners arrived for a funeral.
Hordes of people turned out for the burial of traveller Billy Burton on Friday.
Hundreds of cars, lorries, vans covered in flowers and horse-drawn carts parked up outside Cranfield Park Avenue, off the A127, at Wickford carrying mourners who had come to pay their respects.
Traffic grew for miles as the vehicles parked up on the carriageway ready for a mass funeral cortege to carry the 35-year-old to his final resting place.
The procession moved slowly along the A127 before travelling to the Pitsea Crematorium in Church Road, Bowers Gifford, where family and friends gathered to say their final goodbyes.
Mr Burton was killed instantly after being hit by a blue Mini Cooper while trying to cross the A127 outside the Dick Turpin pub earlier this month.
He had managed to cross the Southend-bound track of the carriageway, but it was when he was crossing the London-bound track when tragedy struck and he was in collision with the car.
The driver of the car, a 17-year-old Brentwood man, was uninjured.
Following his death transport bosses at Essex County Council revealed they were introducing new safety measures at the accident blackspot.
These include a 50mph speed limit, new digital speed cameras and "slow down" signs.
They are all set to be put in place late this summer.
Witnesses to the road crash, which happened at 11pm on Thursday, March 13, can contact officers at the Laindon Road Policing Unit on 01268 541312.
