Sunseekers descend on Southend

SWELTERING temperatures and scorching sunshine attracted thousands of visitors to Southend seafront over the weekend.

Youngsters frolicked in the cold sea and adults relaxed in deckchairs, soaking up the sun in shorts, t-shirts and bikinis.

It meant a busy weekend for businesses in the town, as shoppers packed out the High Street, browsing in shops to escape the glaring sunshine.

Ice cream vendors were especially busy, as people queued for a refreshing 99 cone to cool them down.

However, motorists were stuck in long queues on the A127 and A13 into the town as they tried to get parked and hit the beach.

Drivers queued from Kent Elms corner to get into the town and the seafront snarled up with motorists trying to find a spot to park.

One driver, Chris Laver, 26, from Prince Phillip Avenue in Grays, said traffic was really slow moving as he came along the A127 into the town, at around 2pm yesterday .

He said: "It is always frustrating to get caught up in traffic but the heat made it almost unbearable and then I struggled to find a parking space.

"But once I was parked it was fine and there was a great atmosphere in the town.

"Maybe it is because the sun always seems to put everyone in a good mood."

The sunny weather is due to continue into this week, although temperatures will drop slightly on Wednesday.

Its great to see the town and traders benefiting from the good weather and bringing in visitors.

I just wish that when the trippers leave they would take their rubbish with them.

I cycled along the seafront at 7.00am today (Sunday), and there were huge mounds of rubbish being swept up.

I'd like to say 'thank you and job well done' to the hard working street cleaners who work all hours to clean up after the trippers.

How comes the seafront traders charge at 50p more for a 99 than the Rossis ice cream vans? Bleedin' liberty i say.

It might have helped a bit if the Council had not converted a large chunk of car parking spaces in the middle of Seaways Car Park to Coaches Only. They obviously want to make less money so the land is worth less when they want to build on it.

I do believe that the traders have to pay rent and rates . the vans dont.

I agree about the rubbish comment. I was running early Sunday morning and was disgusted to see how much was left behind. There are bins to use.

Also £1 for a can of Coke, what a joke!
