POLICE have issued a CCTV image of a man they want to talk to following a vicious attack on a train.

A gang of thugs attacked a man while he was travelling on the c2c line between Southend and Benfleet.

They repeatedly punched the 32-year-old in the face and stole his wallet during the unprovoked attack.

The three men, who were all drinking alcohol, tried to talk to the victim and when he got up to use the onboard toilet they followed him and forced the door open, asking him if he wanted to buy drugs.

He said no and tried to leave the train, before they told him to empty his pockets.

Det Con Sally Everritt, of the British Transport Police, said the victim handed over his wallet, but was still punched several times, causing bruising and swelling to his left eye and his head.

She said: "This was an unprovoked attack and understandably left the victim quite shaken."

Police want to speak to anyone who saw the three men, who were all white and in their twenties, following the attack at 11pm on Saturday.

One left the train at Tilbury and the other two got off at Grays. The first had shaved or very short hair, a muscular build and was between 5ft 8ins and 5ft 9ins tall, with an Essex accent. He was wearing a tight, white, short-sleeved top and jeans.

The second man had short black hair, was between 6ft 2ins and 6ft 3ins tall and slim. He was wearing jeans or tracksuit bottoms, a T-shirt and a light-coloured tracksuit jacket.

The last suspect was 6ft tall, with light brown, spiked-up hair and tanned skin. He was wearing a beige T-shirt and jeans.

Det Con Everritt said: "We believe the men may be from the local area."

Anyone with information can call the transport police on 0800 405040, quoting B4 of 15/05/08, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

I wish we had some kind of police presense travelling in the carriages on the late night trains. I like to stay up in the city after work on Friday's but the journey home on my own is very dodgy as you never know what's going to happen. Drunks are the biggest problem too!
Anyway, i really hope this man is ok and that they catch these thugs, someone must recognize this 'man' in the photo?

Actually, there often are plain-clothes police on trains, late night and at other times too. But unfortunately they can't be in every carriage.

Here's hoping the scum get caught.

I have seen plain clothed officers arresting people on the platform, but i want to know who they are on the trains though because when i can feel that something is about to kick off i will leave that carriage, if i knew who the officers were at least i could alert them.
Years ago when i first started working up town i was on a late train where it was just myself and a group of Asian lads left in the carriage, as they got up to leave, one of them came right up to me and spat on my lap, he told me not to get on 'his' train again. I went home and threw my suit away, i never told anyone, and the next day i was back on that train.
You have to use your instinct and always watch your back where ever you are.

I sympathise Sherry. But of course, knowing who the plain-clothes are, well that kind of defeats the purpose eh.

Years ago I was on a slam-door train with a repugnant drunken idiot. He was propositioning a woman on her own. As three of us stepped in, a bloke came out of nowhere, grabbed the drunk guy, threw him off the train, straight into the arms of police on the platform (Laindon) before we knew what had happened. The policeman had been monitoring the hassle & radio-ing ahead the whole time.

So rest assured that people do get looked after, but the police can't be everywhere,

As for c2c security... Well, sorry, but they're just useless chumps hired on a low wage.

Good for you for stepping in to help the woman out, everyone seems to turn a blind eye these days.
(You're right 'Mr Wimpole', they are chumps), lol :)

As for c2c security! I've heard more foul language from them, than from customers!
