A FRANTIC chase culminated in a dramatic water rescue and a missing dog being reunited with its owner.

Crowds of people chased Lily, a west highland terrier, through Canvey town centre after recognising the missing pet from posters put up around the town.

The nervous animal headed down Labworth Road and tried to jump a dyke, but missed, meaning she had to be rescued from the water.

Her owner Wendy Bertie, 62, said: "We were beginning to give up hope, then somebody phoned to say she had seen her in Leigh Road.

"Some workmen saw her and one jumped out of the van to try and catch her, but she got away.

"Then we had a call to say she was at Thorney Bay Caravan Park, then at KFC, and then a call saying there was a westie running up the middle of Furtherwick Road in all the traffic and a man with bare feet chasing her.

"I caught up with them at the dyke to see a bedraggled little Lily, who was covered in twigs and weeds."

Lily had slipped her lead almost a week earlier while her husband Tony Bertie, 66, was walking her at King George's playing fields in Blackthorne Road. When there was still no sign of her the next morning the Berties put a classified ad in the Echo and posters all over Canvey.

Calls came rolling in from concerned islanders with sightings.

But Lily who two months ago was rescued from a puppy farm in Wales where she had been kept in a cage for five years, is nervous around people, making it even harder to catch her.

On Wednesday Mrs Bertie was contacted by Carol Robbins and her daughters Zoe, 17 and Serena, 20.

They joined the hunt and spent all their spare moments tirelessly scouring the island for lost Lily.

Mrs Robbins enlisted the help of her friends, Dave and Frank at Steve's Radio Taxis, who also kept an eye out for the dog and drove her around the island to sightings.

Mrs Bertie said: "I just don't know how I can thank everyone who helped.

"Canvey sometimes gets a bad press, but this has really reaffirmed my faith in human nature.

"Not only have I got my dog back, but I've got a new friend."

Hang about! Surely that's not legal?! Or right, in any sense of the word! Another shining example of the Echo's journalistic skills (or lack of them), methinks!

Still, you've got to love this story really, haven't you?
a westie running up the middle of Furtherwick Road in all the traffic and a man with bare feet chasing her.

You couldn't make it up, could you?!

I'm really pleased they found the dog after scaring it half to death and running it into the sea. Do you get the impression that the dog wants to leave Canvey??

Clive,

I bet you are a right softy really.

I bet you're a bit of a Maverick that likes to buck the trend.

Don't all dogs of the same breed tend to generally look the same - unless they are lucky enough to have a leg missing or buck teeth.

instead of mocking this story, and being pleased that this couple got there dog back home safe, thanks to all the people that helped look out for her while she was missing, y not take a moment to think how distraught the couple were, and what they were feeling inside.

I quite agree Carol,

I've got two dogs and I'd be beside myself if they went missing.

It's a happy ending - lighten up! I'm a dog owner and would be beside myself too but could afford a laugh afterwards if I found him again! There's enough to worry about in the world withoug being down about something that had a happy ending!

then just mayb u should of thought about the comment u made, and spared a thought for the couples feelings, oh and by the way its still early days for the couple to laugh about it.

What comment did I make that offended you so much? I just think some people - not the poor couple who lost the dog - are only happy when they've got something to worry about. It was a happy ending, why go on moaning at everyone who isn't worried about what the outcome could have been! No doubt you will tell me off again... Can't wait! You won't make me sad you know, the sun is shining and the couple have their dog back... Smile for God's sake!

ive read all the post and maybe that woman who made the comment about about those dogs looking the same unless they have a leg missing or buck teeth. dont you think that was abit insensative to write. and yea i do agree with carol that you should of spared the couples feelings and thought about what you wrote first.

mum, Barling says...
3:58pm Thu 22 May 08

I wrote that because I thought the comment from Clive that "those dogs are boring, they all look the same" was insenstive - I wondered what he expected from a breed of dog.

mum, barling says...

I forgot to mention, I have a very happy little dog who has 3 legs & bucked teeth - which makes him special as he doesn't look like the rest of his breed - hence my previous comment. We rescued him like that. I wasn't being insensitive I was referring to my dog!

THE DOG WAS NOT RUN INTO THE SEA AND MAYBE YOU SHOULD RE-READ THE ARTICLE, SHE WAS RESCUED FROM THE DYKE, SO TAKE STOCK ON HOW U WRITE POST ON HERE AND THINK AOUT THE COUPLE ON HOW THEY WOULD FEEL READING YOUR INSENATIVE POST. I JUST HOPE YOU NEVER HAVE TO GO THROUGH WHAT THEY DID. SO SWEETHEART THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK IN FUTURE.
