Property sale is vital for school’s future
A FORMER caretaker's home at a school could be sold as part of plans to form a new educational trust.
Greensward College, in Hockley, hopes to sell the house, which has been used as a training centre, to pay off a £272,000 loan on its sports hall.
The school needs to pay off all outstanding debts and loans before it can merge with two struggling schools in Witham to form an academies enterprise trust.
This would give Greens-ward greater control over its funding. It would be funded directly by the Government rather than Essex County Council. The move will pave the way for a £2million endowment fund, meaning the college would have access to the interest from the Government money.
Mike Barnett, spokesman for Greensward College, said: "If the proposals for Greensward to become an academy go ahead, then it has to make that change to owing no money.
"It currently has a loan out on the provision of the sports hall and the school is looking at the potential disposal of the home in order to balance the books."
Mr Barnett said plans to make Greensward an academy will go to the Education Secretary today if no objections have been made.
The school will close at the end of the school year and reopen as an academy in September. Staff will not be moved to other sites as part of the scheme.
Mr Barnett added: "Green-sward would get nearly £200,000 in improvements to the site in time for September if it goes ahead."

Joining forces with '2 struggling schools' seems to be a recipe for disaster!
