TRIBUTES have been paid to a Good Samaritan who died on the A13 yesterday.

Danny Missons, 44, of Dickens Avenue, Tilbury, was crossing the carriageway on the London-bound track, near to the Five Bells Roundabout, at 5am yesterday when he was hit by a motorcycle.

Mr Missons lived with his mum Dorothy, 74, and brother Peter, 35, in Dickens Avenue, Tilbury.

Peter paid tribute to his brother, a father of two, saying he died a hero as he was trying to help the victims of another crash.

He said: "We loved him dearly.

"In our eyes he was a hero because he crossed the road to make sure the person in the car after a crash was OK.

"He will be greatly missed by us all."

Mr Missons, leaves two children, Carly-Ann, 20, and Daniel, 16, as well as three brothers, Peter, Del, 50, Fred 34, and twin sister Debbey, 44.

He also leaves girlfriend Jane Froskew, 39.

Road closed following smash

Drivers faced huge queues after the road was closed in both directions for five-and-a-half hours and traffic was diverted on to the A127.

The initial accident happened when the driver of a red Vauxhall Corsa lost control of the car and crashed into the central reservation on the Southend-bound track of the carriageway, near the Five Bells roundabout in Basildon, at about 5am yesterday.

The people in the car, two men and a woman, were unhurt and began walking to the roundabout to raise the alarm.

About ten minutes later Mr Missons was knocked down crossing the road, it is believed, to check the people involved were alright.

Ambulance crews raced to the scene and took the rider, who was thrown from his bike, to Basildon Hospital, where he is now fighting for his life.

Traffic police closed the carriageway in both directions while crash investigators examined the scene. Wreckage of the motorbike was later removed from the scene by a recovery lorry.

Police investigating the crash are now appealing for information, and want to talk to two drivers who may be crucial witnesses.

Kim Perks, of Essex Police, said: "Police particularly want to trace the drivers of two vehicles who are believed to have driven past at the time of the crash. They may have vital witness information.

"It is possible the cars were a Ford Focus and a Vauxhall Astra. It is also possible the Astra was blue."

The Southend-bound carriageway reopened at 9.20am and the London-bound track was reopened at 10.40am.

Witnesses to the crash can contact police on 01268 541312 or 0300 3334444.

I feel for the families concerned at such a difficult time.

I recently lost a relative due to a horrific accident so know how it feels to lose someone so suddenly.

RIP

I heard about it as i was on my college bus to Grays, we all knew it was serious due to all the traffic. Our thoughts are with the friends and family to who knew the people involved. We are all thinking of you. Life is taken for granted and has certainly made me realise a thing or two. So sorry again.

utterly pointless death(s), if it was close to the 5 bells would it have been that difficult to walk over the bridged part by the roundabouts where there are paths for the padestrians?
very sad day.

I was woken by all the sirens going on this morning and knew straight away it must be bad. My condolences go out to all the families involved. However walking the kids to school the morning the traffic through fobbing was awful and caused problems down by Herd Lane, I know they had to divert traffic but believe police could have helped control the traffic to help the lollypop lady and kids cross the road to get to school, another accident could easily have happened.

Oh dear...I was diverted because of this today.....I am a biker who uses the A13 every day to commute....this is very sad news for all families and loved ones concerned!

I'm not trying to preach here....honestly, but this is a harsh way to be reminded that bikes can be as dangerous to pedestrians as cars and lorries...please watch out for them as much as you would a car.

Bikes are VERY hard to steer when braking in an emergency; they are not like cars.

If you have a breakdown or accident get out of your vehicle and go the other side of the barrier, please dont try and cross a busy motorway style road.

Life is too precious, be careful on the roads.

Do I need to say any more?

I was a matter of three or four cars behind... the man trying to cross the road to help in an accident on the other carriage way and has paid in the most horrific way - its not like he was crossing for no reason. it was a shocking start to the day and my thoughts go out to all involved - everyone did their best to help until the emergency services got there and I hope the biker pulls through

Very Very sad.

If my bearings are right, it's possible - as the sun would have been rising in the East - that he would not have seen the bike due to the glare. Condolences to the family.

Best wishes to the Biker.

richard and my mum had a love and a life together that all good people deserve and that most, sadly will never have. this is all the more important as some fifteen sixteen years ago they both lost thier other halves within a year of each other , all four people were friends for years prior to this . at that time when two people two families were in a place where there seemed no easing of pain no light at the end of a frightening dark tunnel they found each other.they found true happiness .ive seen my mum lose my dad ,our family has sadly been here before but if i can offer any comfort to anyone close to richard or danny ,especially their families, it would be that no matter how bad and how hard things are right now we all have a future . a future where good things will happen . i know . ive seen it for the last fifteen years in mum and rich .this will get us through no matter how hard each day , week ,month or year will be, be ready our hearts and minds have a long way to go before they adjust to life without our loved one .im hoping none of the people affected by this have been here before especially the young ones we need to look out for them . do not let this blind you to what is right in youre face people near you still need you . what you do affects others ,remember this especially at times when you are clear and focused it will help you to deal with difficult fuzzy times you can expect lots of these i am going to go now . not because i want to ive got so much more to say but because this has taken probably two hours to write to hopefully get right its done me but only for the minute i know that spilling my feelings can not be done all at once it takes time its better for everyone like that we will all come to terms with this in our own time yours will come its not a race and do not feel bad if you heal sooner than someone else it means nothing other than that you will have found acceptance that is a positive thing i really am going now but i want everyone to know that i do not mean to preach or force feed my way on anyone i am in no way religious but i do care and ive got a big mouth i cant help it to jaci and youre family thank you for your kind sentiments if one line of my babbling on helps you and yours in even the smallest way there is a way forward . back to my own family and friends thank you all for everything i really do love you all nearly as much as i did richard. steve brooks
