Teenager stole £4,000 of cable from Southend Hospital

A TEENAGER who stole £4,000 of cable from Southend Hospital was caught...after his family shopped him.

Kevin Choules, 19, admitted stealing the cable from the hospital over the course of two days in August and September.

Police raided his home St Clare Meadow, Rochford, to find some of the stolen cable had been stashed in his loft.

Speaking after the hearing, prosecutor Bob Rowlingson said the raid happened after a family member reported him.

He added: “When they did a property search they found some of it in his loft. They also did enquiries at the scrap yard where he sold the stuff.”

They also found a £250 petrol strimmer which had been stolen from elsewhere in Westcliff.

Choules appeared before Southend Magistrates Court via video link from Chelmsford Prison.

He had pleaded guilty at a previously hearing to two counts of theft and one of handling stolen goods.

The case was adjourned until November when a decision will be made about whether a psychiatric report is necessary.

A psychiatric report? Why? He's a thief, that's not a mental disorder!

It's good to read of a family with moral standards - obviously not an easy thing to do BUT it was the right thing todo.

I think this fella is very lucky to have a family that he CAN trust, he now knows that he can trust them to always do what's right.

Corr I'm well jealous, wish I had a family that would grass me up. Maybe then next time my car tax ran out. They could grass me up and get my car towed away. Yep you can really trust a family like that.

This is a good chance for the criminal justice system to express the revulsion the community have for this hurtful, dangerous and disruptive crime.

5 years minimum should be a reasonable starting sentence.

Only when people are afraid of the prison system will there be any reduction in this crime, and the prison should certainly not allow mobile phones.

A psychiatric report. Seems a bit strange. Unless he suffers something with something else. But what sort of family would grass up their own son? Stupid parents. I want more of this to be happening, theft etc. I want the police to be run off their feet with so much crime, that I can become a criminal with less of a chance of being caught! And I think prison sentences should stay the same or be reduced. 10 hours community service will fit this crime.
