Thanks to binmen who saved my life

A MAN has thanked binmen for saving his life and his leg after they swept into action when a tonne of granite landed on his foot.

Eddie Perry, 58, said he has no doubt without refuse collectors he may not have lived to tell his tale.

The retired mortgage advisor had been at his home in Elder Avenue, Wickford when three slabs of granite - waiting to be installed in his new kitchen - slipped over crashing down on his left foot, and slicing through to his shin bone.

While Eddie lay trapped and bleeding profusely under the massive weight of the slabs, his terrified wife Janice, 60, ran out in the street to call for help.

Luckily the Basildon Council binmen were doing their rounds and four of them rushed in to help.

As the men freed Eddie, binman Paul Baker - a retained firefighter at Wickford - held his body, supporting his weight and leg as the slabs were lifted.

After freeing Eddie, binman Paul Baker - a retained firefighter at Wickford - remained with him for an hour as they waited for paramedics.

Eddie added: “I was in agony and my wife was in a blind panic, but those dustmen were fantastic.

“I have no doubt I would have lost my foot if it weren’t for them.”

Nice to hear abit of good news for once. And even when there is good news, its still about someone being hurt. I wonder what the wonder echo has in store for us this coming week.

What a typically silly comment.

haha, may be lost on most.

.
anyway i do hope this sentance does not mean what it says.."binman Paul Baker - a retained firefighter at Wickford - remained with him for an hour as they waited for paramedics." 1 hour for an ambulance i do hope not.

Glad to here the guy is alright and good on the binmen for helping out.

Though, if I may be permited a silly comment, I am surprised the binmen did this because I thought they didn't touch anything if it's not in a black sack.

Paul Baker is a retained fire fighter don't you know - must be true, and so good, that's why the Echo said it twice...

You must be confusing the Wickford binmen with other binmen. The binmen in Wickford are excellent.
