Crooks break into house in Marlborough Court off Woodfield Road, Leigh, and take laptop containing five years work

Police in Southend are appealing for witnesses or information about a burglary at a flat in Malborough Court, Woodfield Road, Leigh yesterday (October 31).

Between 12 midday and 5pm someone entered the property and stole a laptop and Nikon camera.

The owner, a 24-year-old man, is desperate to get the data on his silver MacBook Pro 15" laptop back as it contains over five years worth of music he has composed, which he had been putting together with future aspirations of a music career. He told police: that this 'was his life and he really needs the data back'.

Anyone with any information about the burglary or is offered the MacBook in unusual circumstances is asked to contact Dc Gail Wilkinson, Southend Target team on 101.

Like you're backing up your comments? :-)

Agree, if something is that important, it should always be backed up. What if a computer breaks, picks up a virus or something else which wipes the hard drive?

Fingers crossed he gets his work back, and learns for the future.

Anything so important should be backed up on at least two separate hard drives each time something is added or edited on the original files. If you leave home for any length of time, make sure at least one of the hard drives goes with you or is left at another address (friend or relative) for safe keeping. Using a Mac the guy could have also backed up through the internet using iCloud or a similar product.

I'm a photographer with 1,000's of images. I would be devastated to lose any of them so back up every time I work. I am surprised that after five years it never occurred to this poor guy "what would I do if something happened to my laptop?" Then, it's easy to be wise after the event, isn't it?
Hope he gets his work back.

Losing a laptop is unfortunate. However, it can be replaced.
Losing inportant data on the laptop, I have no sympathy whatsoever.
We are still hearing of too many people that lose photos or data when their laptop or mobile phone gets stolen. Creatingf a backup (preferably two) should be down to common sense in this day and age, yet we are still seeing a huge lack of it.

It's called 'copy and paste' but that's no excuse for not using a capital R after the exclamation mark.

He might be smarter than we give him credit for. He may have a backup but is pretending he doesn't so that the media would run with the story and improve his chances of getting his hardware back, or the theft investigated. Of course, if he actually doesn't have a backup, then he really is just an idiot.

Obviously I agree with the comments about backing up, hard drives even if not stolen do not have an unlimited lifespan, they do wear out and die, and after 5 years the risk is quite high. Businesses have complex backup strategys to ensure that everything can be recovered, home uesr should do the same, its cheap to buy a spare hard drive or even cheaper, dvd discs cost a few pence.

It does exist on some forums. You get a message to that that you are trying to post a duplicate.
Trouble here is, the forum can be very slow at times, making people think the message hasn't gone.
