LIVE: Police and Crime Commissioner result LIVE: Police and Crime Commissioner result

THE result of the county’s first ever Police and Crime Commissioner will be known today.

The new commissioner role will replace the former police authority system and the person selected will be in charge of hiring and firing the chief constable, setting the force’s budget and making sure officers’ are accountable to the public.
 

We're at the count and will bring you the result as soon as it's revealed.

Politicians of all parties should look at this and realise they are completely and totally out of touch with the voters of this country, the turn out is so low it is a gross embarrassment for the Government.
Only am MP can find excuses for this embarrassment.
I just hope that Policing now in Counties will not be led by the same Government that has no mandate to do so.

The low turnout had little to do with party politics and more to do with the near complete lack of information given out to the electorate. I had to go online to find out who the Essex candidates are and what their election statements said.

They lost 4 votes from my family, as we had no idea who to vote for, or what their policies were, no leaflet drops and hardly any information available. Badly organised :( They didn't seem bothered so we didn't either.

Same as all the other comments on here, NO information was put through the door. Seriously if this is an important election, you would thought this incompetent government would have arranged for all candidates to be able to get together and do a mail shoot to every potential voter, but no!
That's why there's voter apathy, we had NO information whatsoever, and that's why the turnout is under 20%.

At 6pm last night I was voter number 74 at my polling station. Bit sad really, this is an important role with a significant amount of power and budget. Communications from the Home Office should have been much better

Out of all the contenders, only two people had any real experience. One was a Conservative and the other was a politician.
The Labour woman wanted to coddle the drunks with 'sobering up vans' and there was this kooky far-right guy whose platform boiled down to 'put flags on the police stations'.

So, I was forced into the unenviable position of voting for a man who has the most experience but is part of the same party that wants to privatise our police force.

Amazing that Southend was the only place that Mick Thwaites trounced the rest. Must be a big signal to our Tory MP'S that their greed in the expenses scandals might finally signal their demise. Perhaps the conservative selection committees should think about some new candidates for the next general election.

I support our Council as I think they are doing a good job in Southend. I don't think party politics should be part of the PCC and Mick Thwaites has the only comprehensive Police experience. That's why I voted for him.

Not entirely true. Alston was doing police work in Northern Ireland, which is why I voted for him. He has practical experience in an area far more dangerous than Essex. Therefore he must logically be considered the most qualified man.

Given the apathetic turnout does Mr Alston think he has any kind of mandate to talk on behalf of the people of Essex? I have no political allegiance and would ask the same of any candidate. Until a proper election takes place, whoever sits in the PCC seat right now is just taking money under false pretences.

In answer to those who say they decided not to vote due to the lack of information, I have to ask if you read newspapers, watch television, listen to the radio or read news on the internet? The government made it clear that they were not going to finance postage for leaflet dropping by the candidates, but that there would be full information on a dedicated website. It was also announced in all forms of media that you could request printed copies of the information issued by either registering online or phoning an 0800 number, I also believe that council offices & libraries etc would have been able to help.
That being said, I actually read the information supplied by the candidates, & found it very wanting. I also read of the meetings they stated they had attended, but had not not seen any mention of these anywhere before they took place as, had there been any in my area, I would have tried to attend.
Basically, the publicity given to these elctions was too little, too late.
